Shoshone/Goshute Youth Language Apprenticeship Program

SYLAP is a paid internship in linguistics and an opportunity for Shoshone and Goshute high school students to begin learning their heritage language.  Qualified students will participate in a six-week intensive language class at the University of Utah, while working at CAIL and staying in the university dorms.  The program will take place June 12 - July 25, 2009.  Applications are due May 1, 2009 at 5 PM.  For more information email k.matsumoto@utah.edu or call (801) 587-0720.  The program is free and students will be paid a stipend for their work.

Students who have finished their sophomore year in high school by the start of the summer program and/or are a current junior or senior in high school are eligible for the program.  Applicants should also be a registered member of a Shoshoni or Gosiute tribe and/or be able to obtain recommendation from tribal leaders and high school teachers.

Project

Participants will work on our existing language documentation and revitalization programs at CAIL.  These projects include, creating a Shoshone/Goshute and English bilingual dictionary, working on film projects of Shoshone/Goshute stories, and linguistic study of traditional stories and oral histories of the Great Basin region.  Participants will also take an intensive Shoshone/Goshute language course which they will receive college credit for.

We also hope to bring elders and tribal leaders to the University of Utah campus to participate in the program at all levels of involvement.  If you would like to consult on the development of this project, please contact Katherine Matsumoto-Gray or Bryan Hudson, Jr. at (801) 587-0720.
